Ja Morant Superstar or Bust?

On June 20, 2019 in Brooklyn, NY the 2019 NBA draft occurred. This draft gave young basketball players the opportunity that they’ve been training they’re whole lives for… the opportunity to play in the NBA. While not all drafted players are guaranteed success in the NBA, this is still a great achievement for theses young guys.

To no one’s surprise the top 3 picks in this draft were Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, and RJ Barrett respectfully. Personally, I think that all of these guys have the ability and skills to succeed in the NBA.

For the purposes of this article, I am going to focus on the potential of Ja Morant. With the 2nd pick in the 2019 NBA draft the Memphis Grizzlies selected Ja Morant out of Murray State University. With the recent trade of Mike Conley, it was pretty obvious that the Grizzlies were looking to draft their new franchise point guard. The Grizzlies believe that they have found this with Ja Morant.

Personally, Ja is the prospect in this year’s draft that i’m most interested in watching. During the few games that I watched ja play, I was memorized by his all-around solid and exciting play. He can create his own shots and he can create scoring opportunities for his teammates. These are both qualities that make a solid point guard. However its not all good for Ja. Like any other prospect he has his own weaknesses. His main weaknesses are that he plays questionable defense, can be turnover happy, and doesn’t have the best 3pt shot.

Honestly, Ja reminds me a lot of Russell Westbrook. A turnover happy point guard that can regularly get a triple-double. These similarities to an all-star caliber point guard makes me believe that Ja will be an all-star caliber player in the NBA. When I see Ja I see a player who with the help of another all star can take the Grizzlies to the playoffs.

Wouldn’t it be crazy if Ja, an unranked player coming out of high school, became an NBA all star? What do you guys think about Ja Morant? Where do you see his NBA career going?

Utah Jazz Championship Contenders?

Breaking News! The Utah Jazz have just completed a trade that will send Mike Conley to the Jazz in exchange for Jae Crowder, Kyle Korver, Grayson Allen, and 2 1st-round draft picks.

When I first saw this breaking news on twitter I was both shocked and pleased. I was shocked because Utah got a borderline all-star for almost nothing. I was pleased because the Western Conference just got even more competitive.

Back in Memphis Mike Conley was part of the grit and grind Grizzlies teams that made it to the playoffs year after year. These teams were known for their defense and somewhat dull play. While at Memphis, Conley proved to be solid starting point guard who some view as a borderline all-star.

With the acquisition of Mike Conley. The Utah Jazz can be expected to have a starting lineup of Conley, Mitchell, Ingles, Favors, and Gobert. The addition of Mike Conley really helps strengthen the Jazz’s defense, which is all ready something the Jazz excelled in. Alongside this, Conley also helps take some of the scoring pressure off of Donovan Mitchell. In the 2018-19 NBA season, Conley averaged 21pts and 6 asts per game. This is good for Mitchell because at times during last season it seemed like he was the only source of offense for the Jazz.

Honestly, this trade has helped Utah become a threat in the already stacked Western Conference. Utah has the potential to go pretty far in the playoffs. What do you guys think about this trade? Are the Jazz championship contenders? Or do they need more?
